چکیده

We determine the phase diagram of several amphiphilic molecules as a function of the amphiphilic parameter alpha defined as the ratio of the volume of hydrophilic to hydrophobic segments using the Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo method supplemented by configurational bias scheme. Specifically, we study amphiphilic molecules h(1)t(7), h(2)t(6), and h(3)t(5), for which alpha=0.14, 0.33, and 0.60 respectively, and demonstrate that the former two exhibit phase separation while h(3)t(5) forms micelles, supporting the contention that alpha=0.5 is the border line for phase separation and micellization, as observed in previous lattice Monte Carlo studies [Panagiotopoulos et al., Langmuir 18, 2940 (2002)]. Further, we study the phase separation in amphiphilic molecules as a function of the packing parameter by varying the size of the hydrophilic head for each molecule. We find that a larger hydrophilic head lowers the critical temperature T(c), and raises the critical density rho(c).

Adhesive loose packings of small dry particles.

We explore adhesive loose packings of small dry spherical particles of micrometer size using 3D discrete-element simulations with adhesive contact mechanics and statistical ensemble theory. A dimensionless adhesion parameter (Ad) successfully combines the effects of particle velocities, sizes and the work of adhesion, identifying a universal regime of adhesive packings for Ad > 1. The structura...

Molecular Simulation of Three-body Interactions for Vapor-liquid and Solid-liquid Phase Equilibria

The phase behavior of both pure systems and binary mixtures has been widely studied by molecular simulation [1], using techniques such as the Gibbs ensemble [2], Gibbs-Duhem [3] or histogram reweighing [4] algorithms. The common aim of many of these investigations is to accurately predict the phase diagram using effective intermolecular potentials, most notable the Lennard-Jones potential. In c...

Atomistically Informed Extended Gibbs Energy Description for Phase-Field Simulation of Tempering of Martensitic Steel

In this study we propose a unified multi-scale chemo-mechanical description of the BCT (Body-Centered Tetragonal) to BCC (Body-Centered Cubic) order-disorder transition in martensitic steel by adding the mechanical degrees of freedom to the standard CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) type Gibbs energy description. The model takes into account external strain, the effect of carbon compositi...

Magnetic Properties in a Spin-1 Random Transverse Ising Model on Square Lattice

In this paper we investigate the effect of a random transverse field, distributed according to a trimodal distribution, on the phase diagram and magnetic properties of a two-dimensional lattice (square with z=4),  ferromagnetic Ising system consisting of magnetic atoms with spin-1. This study is done using the effectivefield theory (EFT) with correlations method. The equations are derived using...

اثر برهم‌کنش‌های چهار اسپینی برروی سیمای فاز مدل هایزنبرگ J1-J2 پادفرومغناطیس اسپین 3/2 شبکه لانه زنبوری

In this study, the effect of four-spin exchanges between the nearest and next nearest neighbor spins of honeycomb lattice on the phase diagram of S=3/2 antiferomagnetic Heisenberg model is considered with two-spin exchanges between the nearest and next nearest neighbor spins. Firstly, the method is investigated with classical phase diagram. In classical phase diagram, in addition to Neel order,...
